that is a wonderful pic, though i dont thing its a real maiko. there are shops you know, that can dress you up like a maiko or a geisha. her hair looks to be a wig, real maiko dont wear wigs, and her makeup is is rather unrefined.

the background is great, i love the hanging tendrils of cherry blossum! may i ask where you were?

Why is a Raven like a writing desk?

She is a maiko not a geisha, though I'm not sure if she's real or not either. The Maiko are allowed to wear wigs these days since they don't spend their whole lives growing their hair long for the "do". The maiko also wear wigs for performances and such. I was in Kyoto a few months ago and I had the experience of dressing up as a Maiko. I've also been studying the Geisha and the Maiko for several years!

though its true there are shops that can dress you up like a real geisha here are some neat perhaps little known facts about geisha , both maiko and geiko

1real maiko can wear wigs , japanese hair is thick and heavy compared with westerners , but the hairdresser may still put a pad of artificial hair called ketabo in the side locks or paper inside the body of the hair to give it extra shape and support.

2in gion-kobu on the occasion of th miyako odori * cherry dance* the maiko wears the shimada wig , which is the same style as the geiko's.

3however geiko often did wear wigs becaus they had to change hairstyles according to the dance she was required to perform at the ozashiki
